Rennie Pilgrem

Thursday Club Recordings (TCR)

Rennie started life playing tenor saxophone and sitting with his Father’s various bands around Southern England. Later he formed various funk bands playing sax and keyboards.. After making rudimentary House music on the wrong kind of drum machines with soon to be Rhythm Section members Ellis Dee, Richard Thake and Nick ‘Newton Scott, they had interest from (amongst others) the new British house label Guerrilla.

Preferring to release their own material they formed Rhythm Section Recordings and became part of the wave of breakbeat house that went on to become known as Hardcore in the early ‘90’s.
Their third release ‘Comin’ On Strong’ was so huge it stayed in the Dance Charts for 2 years. Rhythm Section played at pretty much every main party between ’90-92’ on the same bill as The Prodigy, Moby, Altern 8, Shades Of Rhythm and Bizzare Inc.

In 1993 Rennie founded Thursday Club Recordings (TCR) as a medium for putting out his own material. He had a big tune with ‘Thursday Theme’ which was chased by Virgin, while his next release 'A Place Called Acid' (1995) was one of the biggest breakbeat tunes around and resulted in him being offered gigs around the world. TCR currently has the biggest Catalogue of Breakbeat tracks in the World and has passed its 100th 12” Release.

In 1996 Rennie set up legendary London night 'Friction' with Adam Freeland, Tayo and Ian Williams. He also coined the term 'Nu Skool' along with his fellow Friction partners as a way of describing their music.

He has held residencies in Rome and London (at his own HUM night and now STIR). He is also part of the team responsible for the ‘Breaksday’ concept – which has had parties in Miami, London and The Glade Festival.

Apart from releasing on his own TCR imprint, Rennie has released records on Whole9yards, City Of Angels, Chrysalis/EMI, Mob and China Records to name but a few. He's collaborated with many top producers including legend Arthur Baker, BLIM (Breakpoll Best Single ‘2Freaks’), and is currently also one half of acclaimed NuFunk duo Bush Doctors.

He has been voted ‘Most Valuable/Influential Person’ at The International Breaks Awards four years running and also also picked up awards for Best Single (2Freaks) and Best Remix for the huge Emit/Collect by DJ Zero.

2004 Rennie released a mix album on Perfecto ‘Perfecto Breaks’ which was the first mix album ever to utilise Ableton Live.

He has written music for a many commercials, scored the Theme Music for The Football Factory and written tracks for Sony’s Wipeout Pure PSP game.

In 2005 Rennie formed ‘Rennie Pilgrem & The TCR Allstars as a Live project. 15 gigs later including Glastonbury and The Glade Festival they have been included amongst the ‘20 Best Live acts to see’ in IDJ Magazine.

Amongst all this Rennie somehow finds the time to write reviews for IDJ Magazine and Big Shot Magazine in the USA. In 2007 Rennie also hosted a weekly Breaks Show on Galaxy Digital, and he continues to provide guest DJ mixes for various specialist radio shows such as Annie Nightinglade Radio 1 show, Brap FM and many others.

He is part of Stir which takes over renowned night club Heaven in London as an ‘indoor Glade’ concept in which Breaks rubs shoulders with Psy-Trance and other genres of dance music.

He has released ‘Live At The Cavern’ a Mix album recorded Live in Exeter at the UK’s longest running Breaks night. Featuring Rennie on Live Keyboards and mixing this is the first of its kind and has received huge critical acclaim. His single ‘Dutty Work / Clobber’ has earned ‘Single of the Month’ titles in both DJ mag and iDJ magazine and plays from Pete Tongs show on Radio 1 amongst many others.

In 2008 he released his third artist album entitled ‘Skin’ , gaining him further fans and wide media support - Annie Nightingale is calling this album ‘Breathtaking’...

Recently, Rennie has taken an active interest in producing and playing less of what is widely known as Breaks, and turning more towards the new exciting genre that is NuFunk. Taking things in a new direction, NuFunk is an exciting new brand of modern funk, a sound that began as a bootleg scene and is now fast becoming an international platform for all things mid-tempo and ultra-funky.

Rennie has already been tipped as one of the scene’s main players, and with his own NuFunk EP entitled ‘Street Legal’ out recently on TCR, he is certainly set to take things a step further.

Equally at home in Main Rooms, Second Rooms, at Festivals and VIP Rooms, his new ‘Grass Roots’ style is super-fresh and party-friendly – guaranteed to get any dance floor moving.

Future Funk Squad (FTR FNK SQD)
https://soundcloud.com/futurefunksquad
En:Vision Recordings / InExtinct Records

Future Funk Squad is actually just one person, über-producer Glen Nicholls. One of the most respected figures in the international breakbeat scene, he’s remixed more name artists than you can shake a funky stick at and DJ’d all over the world.
The Prodigy (twice), Moloko, UNKLE, Hybrid, Muse, Mylo, Stanton Warriors and Bomb The Bass are just a few of the acts who’ve benefited from a FFS respray, not to mention some of his childhood heroes such as Yazoo.
Future Funk Squad did become a band in the mid-noughties, producing the acclaimed ‘Audio Damage’ album and touring with a full six-piece live set-up. But lately Glen has taken the FFS sound back to its DJ/producer roots, releasing the ‘Disorders Of Skill’ album and leaving behind the record label that tried to make him go too commercial.
Growing up in Dorset, Glen started off making drum & bass before accidentally stumbling upon nu skool breaks after hitting the tempo button to take one of his tunes down to 145bpm.
Pressing up some white labels, he soon found that some top DJs were playing it and he started DJing himself with his mate Neil Briggs, who would later become breaks DJ/producer High Eight. Tongues firmly in cheeks, they called themselves Future Funk Squad and began playing fun-fuelled big beat and breaks out around the local clubs.
When Glen moved to London around the Millennium he took the name with him, and was soon offered his own label – Default – through Champion Records after remixing house classic ‘Break 4 Love’ by Raze.
He’d started remixing other artists to get the FFS name about, and quietly but assuredly elevated himself to the position of one of the foremost breakbeat artists in the world.
When it came to formulating his debut album in the mid-noughties, he was working with vocalists such as MC Mojo and Tamra Keenan. The idea of producing a FFS band (a squad, if you like) started to germinate around the ‘Audio Damage’ album.
The album was well received and the band played shows in places like China and eastern Europe, but Glen realised he’d perhaps bitten off more than he could chew trying to keep a fully functioning band on the road.
Taking his sound back to its roots, he re-energised his own label En:Vision Recordings, and set about producing new music that’s, as he says, “more science”.
Glen also undertook some more remixes, revamping The Prodigy’s rave anthem ‘Warrior’s Dance’ as well as tracks by indie stalwarts White Lies and electro-pop singer Ladyhawke.
When ‘Disorders Of Skill’ came out in mid-2009, it was immediately hailed as a breakbeat masterpiece. “This is better than 99% of anything you have heard in breakbeat before,” raved Thisisbreaks.com.
From opener ‘Zones’ onwards, ‘Disorders’ is an album full of dancefloor dynamite, yet it retains an almost filmic quality in places – perfect to sync to films, TV shows and video games. It’s no wonder that sync experts Position Music have signed the album for America.
There’s now a remix album, cunningly called ‘Reorders Of Skill’, with some of the top names in breakbeat reworking choice album cuts.

Sweet Charlie (DJ Sweet Charlie)
https://soundcloud.com/djsweetcharlie
Kaleidoscope Music / DogEatDog Records

Ranked #8 Beatport Breakbeat artist in 2017, Sweet Charlie has dropped beats with some of the biggest names in breaks including Simply Jeff, Huda Hudia, DJ Icey, Deekline and more. Only three months after he began spinning records he was booked to perform at Orbit Nightclub with Simply Jeff and Resident Alien. He brings a unique style and excitement to the turntables by seamlessly mixing a diverse blend heavy bass, beautiful melody lines, dirty synths, and angelic vocals into a landscape of crescendos and decrescendos that keep the dance floors packed. Sweet Charlie brought you “I Wanted You” & “Up All Night,” and in only two years with Kaleidoscope Music quickly ascended from unranked to the now #7 artist on the breaks charts. His production and involvement helped bring home the Album of the Year Award for Kaleidoscope Records last year.

Holding a residency at Club Chill in West Palm Beach in 2001 along with Scratch-D (Dynamix II), H-Bomb and B-Minus, Sweet Charlie started out on Thursday nights and was quickly added to the Saturday night rotation. From that time on, he began performing at venues like Club 5, Blue Martini, Emerald City, X-it, Sonar, Deluxe, Le Cabaret and the list goes on. It was then that Sweet Charlie met and opened for his heroes, forming long lasting relationships that led to collaborations and ultimately chart-topping releases. He held residencies at Club 109, Ovation, Ohm, Ray's, Sky Lounge, Spanky's, and the Red Room, and spun at numerous parties for Culture Music and the Hazmat Crew in Miami.

Rising star Sweet Charlie started his house and electronica label Modern Beat Digital in 2008, where (under the alias Modern Beat Orchestra), his debut EP “Children of the Beat,” received international radio play. In 2009 he submitted a single from the EP for critique at an A&R workshop at Winter Music Conference, impressing one panelist so much that he hired Sweet Charlie as a producer. The panelist was no other than Chicago and UK house icon Darryl Pandy.

Sweet Charlie found his home with Kaleidoscope Music in 2016, where he partnered with long-time friend and mentor, Huda Hudia. Since then Sweet Charlie has released over a dozen top ten singles, while branching out for collaborative releases on DogEatDog, Gigabeat, and more.

Raised by a musically gifted family, Sweet Charlie began piano, classical percussion and drum lessons at the age of eight. He attended a performing arts high school and won full music scholarships to several universities in Florida. His background not only enriched his taste for music, it provided a sonic foundation to build his own sound and style.

Sweet Charlie connects with tomorrow’s generation of bass fans by fusing elements of big room, future bass, and trap with the breakbeat rhythms that got him hooked years ago.
